Adding Open Short Positions

Is it already possible to add a “short position”? Starting with a sell position and closing it with a buy position? I am considering using Sharesight or alternatives. I am usually a long investor, but some past trades are short trades. I need to include those in the P/L.

My work around so far is
Short selling is basically selling first, and buying later.

I just swap the dates, keep the record, and when the short closes, you add the dates manually.

Definintely a work around.
Sharesight definintely needs to add this, its like half the world doesn’t exist.

Still waiting on this.
Sharesight: Unlike some of the other features, you are 100% losing customers over this.

Hi @Sharesight, is there any update on this topic?

I will happily return as a premium subscriber if you sort this issue out…

Is it really that hard?

Perhaps it might be challenging and you might need to pay for some development, but I have no doubt you would significantly increase your customer base and revenue if you could support this rather elementary function.

At the very minimum, can the rest of the trades be imported into the system for that stock? I can manaully add them in later but if the first trade is a short, it still saves it but just doesn’t do the other calculation for it. So they may aswell be imported anyway right?

Hi, I am in the process of finishing a tool that process all security types: stocks, options (long/short, assignment/exercises), futures (long/short), bonds (no calc of accrued interest as I have almost never bonds, but easy to add). The tool requires importing all transactions and corporate actions and cash transactions from your broker. I have made an interface for IBKR and DeGiro. So after importing you have exactly the same cash balances. The tool exports reporting data in CSV for further analysis in tools like Excel pivot table or Power BI desktop. The only purpose of the tool is to process the transaction data for different brokers correctly and calculate results and portfolio performance (IRR/TWR). It is a command line tool, written in C. Very fast, thousands of transactions within a second. I will make it available freeware within a couple of weeks. I have built the tool because I was very disappointed about another tool I have used. But recently I found ShareSight and must admit it is a good tool at first sight. Although for me not useful because I trade also in options and futures on European markets. furthermore I don’t like uploading personal data, I want it to stay on my computer. I would like if I had such a nice interface for my tool. But I am a system programmer and not that good at UI programming. I have been thinking on building an electron desktop app.

I’ll add to the chorus of voices here. I’ve been using Sharesight happily for a year or so now. Just started using short positions, as a hedge/ risk management strategy in my case, hedging against an index fund when the market is volatile (QQQ/QLD currently).

Logically, it’s not that difficult. If you could just support sells ahead of buys, initially even, without accounting for the borrowing costs (which I expect could be done as a workaround), then it would at least be workable. Right now I will need to manage this beside my Sharesight portfolios.

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi All,

Whilst we are all waiting for Sharesight to add this feature…

This is what I’m currently doing as a workaround.
Add a fake “opening Balance” of e.g. 1m shares @ $0.000000001. This makes it easy for me to remember I have a fake transaction.

Once the whole shorting position is closed, add a “cancellation” trade for the above.

Obviously your portfolio return would look quite stupid before you close out the short position. I have created a seperate portfolio just for the shorts.

Adding my voice to the request for Short Selling support on Sharesight.
