Tips to avoid duplicate trades

Just to share a few tips on how to keep your portfolio updated without trade duplication.

Trade confirmation (or contract note)
Always check if Sharesight support your broker’s trade confirmation. If we do, check if your broker lets you add a secondary email address. If it does, add your portfolio email address to your brokerage account. Have your broker auto forward that. If it doesn’t, you have two options: setup an email forwarding rule or manual forward. (More info here)

No trade confirmation or we don’t support
The next best options in this case are:

  1. Add trade manually
  2. File import (primarily reason for duplication)

File import
One way to avoid duplication when you do file import is:

  1. Run All trades report > ungroup > sort by latest date
  2. Look at the last buy/sell
  3. When you search trades in your broker, set the start (or from) date to the date after the last trade.

AI assist import
We recently rolled out Clerk AI, an AI assist import (currently in beta. More info here) that can read files, statements, screenshot, image that contain your trades. So that is another way to import your trades. But the AI won’t know if the trade you import is already in your portfolio. You still need to check that before importing.
